I just learned about the Zhu Zhu toy fad happening this Christmas. Is that because I don't watch TV? I feel I'm missing some important pop culture (not the Zhu Zhu part but other stuff). I am, however, keeping a cleaner house and perhaps growing my brain.

I am thankful that I have wonderful friends who filled my house last Sat for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner.

I am thankful for the family that will be here soon for yet another dinner.

I am thankful for the internet, that lets me meet and share friendships with people distant from me.

Okay, so I have noticed that there hasn't been any substantial talk about Pennsic here on tribe or facebook .....and by my campmates are chatting up about it, talking about garb, camp gear, the newbies are posting questions, people are discussing their pack lists or they are already PACKED and READY to gooooooo !!! There are usually theme parties already being discussed, shows being advertised...and here, it's almost MAY and it's so...eerily quiet.

It's FREAKIN' ME OUT !!!!

Is this economy killing our Pennsic? Has anyone even PRE-REGISTERED yet ???? Is anyone even EXCITED about going ???

What's "other mail"?

In my tribe mail box I have, friend request, intivites, inbox and other mail. What qualfies as other mail? I never paid much attention to it till today. I've had two e-mails in my other mail box and they are both from people with questionable profiles. The say the love me and want my e-mail address and they both give theirs. What's the scam? Should I report them?

ITS - Mihri Deniz-Yetim of Blue Lotus Tribe
ITS or improvisational tribal style bellydance evokes the spirit of social folkloric dancing that one might have witnessed in period. Dancers in this class will learn a basic vocabulary of movements and how to create a dance in the moment using these moves and a system of cues and transitions. We will also discuss tips for making your ITS dance a bit more SCA friendly through music and garb choices.

Poi-tastic - Kenna of Gypsy Soul
As we all strive to become better dancers, we want to add layers to our dance. Poi, an art form originating from New Zealand, can help your dance to the next level. In this class you will learn basic poi moves and combinations that will give you the foundation for incorporating poi into your dance. Note: You can make your own practice poi from knee high socks and tennis balls or fancy sock poi will be available for purchase.

Basic Sword Technique- Shanrae of Tribal Fire
Included in this class is care and safety for sword, discussing how to infuse a sense of mystery/danger into your swordwork, a basic warm up, covering balance points, basic floorwork/level changes and a short choreography. Students please bring a sword.

Dancing with Drummers - Jezebel
Taught along side the Drumming with Dancers class, come join us as we dance with the drummers using some games to get the creative juices flowing and a little choreograhy to be used with one of the rhythms.

Funky Combos - Anne and Jenn of Gypsy Soul
Combining bellydance with other world dance influences for new, fun combinations. Learn sassy, funky combos to spice up your next routine.

Beginner Darbuka - Mark of Ishtar
For beginner percussionists or drummers who have let the dust settle on their
drums! Sit with Mark and refresh your memory about drum hits, and basic Middle
Eastern Rhythms.

The Art of Taksim with Basic Makam Theory - Melissa of Ishtar
How to make your improvisational solos go somewhere and come back. Which notes
are important in which makam. How to cue/communicate with other musicians. Also,
how to practice your improvisational skills at home.

Middle Eastern Music Ensemble - Melissa of Ishtar
Percussionists and Melody musicians, learn songs together!

Drumming for Dancers - Kilij Kayin
Drummers, come and learn some simple techniques used to play with bellydancers at performances and haflas. Learn techniques that will help you work as a team to improve the performances of both drummers and dancers. This class will be taught along side the Dancing with Drummers class.

This is a community event designed to bring together dancers and musicians inspired by Middle Eastern music. Experienced or inexperienced: all are welcome!

Tribal Fire is hosting their Second Annual "Spirit in Motion Belly Dance Benefit" for Akron Children's Hospital.

This family-friendly event is taking place at the Foltz Community Center (224 Wood St. N., East Canton, OH 44730) and will feature some of Ohio’s finest troupes and soloists, with styles that include Tribal Fusion, Egyptian, Cabaret, Dark Tribal Fusion, Gothic and Tribal Style Belly Dance.

Doors open at 6:30 - Show starts at 7pm.

Tickets at the door for $12, or visit www.darklotusdance.com to purchase $10 advance tickets.

My sister told me to join Facebook because all of our Canadian relatives are there. I did, yesterday. I've wasted so much time there I can't even tell you.

On Youtube I'm watching Paula's videos (love ya girl) and Sparklage or something like that. She's a cute little person who offers makeup tutorials. She does these crazy looks (Snow White, Barbie on the town, rainbow, etc.) I love her. I've spent hours watching her goofy ideas and then looking at the products she's using. I've heard from our Pittsburgh Bellies and it looks like everyone is still going to give it a go!

Some out of towners are coming in to the hotel tonight to have the trip done and over with as there seems to be a break in the weather here now! The hotel has rooms available tonight and can put you under the Pittsburgh Bellies room rate if you want to come in early...

holiday giving

I'm trying to instill a kind heart to my kids, so on Friday, we're having a canned food drive at home. My sister has to send each of her five kids with a can of food for me to allow them to spend the night (plus they all have to bring a pillow. I hate scrounging the house for pillows.)

We'll make holiday cards and Christmas cookies to be delivered to the low income senior citizens home in town. I guess Giant Eagle has cut way back on its baked goods, so they don't donate treats the the seniors.

Calling all bellydancers - research help needed!

I am beginning my doctoral case report for my physical therapy program. A friend of my family used to bellydance professionally before she discovered she had multiple sclerosis. Twenty years later, she is pretty severely affected and stuck in a wheelchair, and has asked me to teach her wheelchair bellydance. I can do my case report on anything I want to, so I am researching the effects of bellydance on treating multiple sclerosis.

Common issues afflicting people with MS includes decreases in posture, static and dynamic balance, trunk stability, aerobic capacity, muscle strength/control, flexibility and breathing capacity, and increases in fatigue level and depression. I have broken down aspects of bellydance and feel that when routines are properly put together they can coincide with these issues exactly. The question I will research is how much does bellydance actually help these issues in MS? Another aspect I am studying is if the addition of bellydance (rhythmic combinations of all the above set to music) can promote compliance to activity (home exercise program) and improve depression. I plan on measuring all these aspects scientifically.

Last summer I treated an MS patient with trunk balance, posture, strength, and fatigue issues with a pelvic and trunk program on a stability ball and thought it looked a lot like bellydance. The patient improved greatly, and does the exercises herself at home every day, and enjoys doing them. This really gave me the idea, and I look forward to being able to document any impact an actual bellydance routine might have on an old pro who wants to feel like a dancer again.

If anyone has any information on research for any type of dance, training (yoga, pilates, etc) or any ideas on the components I have listed above that may be influenced by dance or that may pertain to therapeutic benefit of any kind, let me know. If you know of anyone with MS who can provide perspective, let me know. I have an entire year to finish this case report

I like to go all out gawdy with my decorations. But I was at my friend's house this weekend who does the Martha Stewarty style with her decoration coordination and she only uses white lights on everything ...and it really looks so perfect and elegant ...but it just didn't feel like "me."

I joined a book club at work, haha, yes I'm a dork. We meet with upper management and pick out a book and read that should benefit us personally and professionally. I'm now reading Crucial conversations- tools for talking when stakes are high.

Anyone ever read it? I'm not much of a "reader" but it seems to be pretty great so far! Communication is always the key to life, love, and success...so I'm hoping it ends as well as it has started!

Now that the weather is turnin' chilly - there's nothing I love more than putting on my jammies, sipping tea and reading books....

Right now, I'm halfway thru a biography about Mata Hari. The book is titled "Femme Fatale" by Pat Shipman.... it documents her life from childhood to ... well, we know how the story ends - but it's been interesting so far reading how she got where she did.

Here are a few books that I've read recently and recommend:

"The Girl with the Pearl Earring" - Tracy Chevalier ....story based on the painting by Johannes Vermeer

You were all fantastic and made this a super success. I want to apologize to Hareem Shareem for not getting them on the bill! I was under the impression Wicked Gypsy was going to perform instead. When Animals Go Wild ....

This morning I was feeding my turtles - (I have 3 of them) ... and while I was feeding one of them... another one decided to sneak up and latch onto my finger - well, I found out really fast that they don't let go until they want to let go.....granted, right now they are really small turtles - but what happens when they get bigger ?
